Web sites

I started early in the Web helping to build the Canada's first commercial web site at wimsey.com in Burnaby.

Wimsey, as in Lord Peter, was run by Unix guru Stuart Lynn (another Stuart!). Wimsey was a small service mainly suppling Internet news feeds to the then-big bulletin boards in Vancouver, plus limited Internet-via-Unix for techies.

I helped Wimsey’s transition to the then-new ‘point-and-click’ Internet. Wimsey quickly supplanted the bulletin boards and the rest, as they say, is history. So is wimsey.com. It was bought out by Istar, which then died its own horrible death by acquisition, Dog knows by whom. www.wimsey.com now takes you to this.

I built the first web sites for:: Vancouver Village (now Vancouver magazine); Open Learning Agency Web Publishing course; THA Media (very early site for small screens); Moving Images (they're still using it); Kootenay School of the Arts

Because the Web moves so fast the only one that exists in its original form is the Moving Images site. And so it goes...

The most interesting and fun site I built is my A Buddhist in Mongolia, which I put together from emails I wrote while researching the rebuilding of a heritage Buddhist monastery.

Now I’ve moved on to WordPress sites, a free blog content management system that I like very much. Here are all five (!) of my current blog sites (do you think i’m spreading myself out too much?):

Majority Coalition Canada is the latest, launched in December, 2008. It's the one I'm most focussed on right now. That, Dandelion Times and greenpolitics.ca are the the ones most likely to develop significant audiences at this time, although with the death of the parliamentary coalition, this one may struggle for a while.
greenpolitics.ca is a critique of Green parties, mostly focussed on the BC Green party, and a statement of what I regard as the principles of green political philosophy. I've been neglecting this recently while I developed Majority Coalition Canada, but I plan to return to this one in the near future.
Dandelion Times is different in that I created and edit it for a group of people on the left-bio email list. It's aim is to promote and discuss the emerging personal and political philosophy of ecocentrism, which puts Nature as the primary focus and supports the needs and right to exist of every human being and animal species on this planet.
Lovers of Life is my personal philosophical site, rather neglected but closest to my heart of all of them. One day I'll focus on that — I keep promising myself!
stuzog.com is the oldest one, it has some samples from my personal writing portfolio written while in Victoria these last ten years, plus some early web sites I built.
